your daily bread

Day 348 - 12-14.jpg

“Grant what we need each day in bread and insight: subsistence for the call of growing life.” Neil Douglas-Klotz

Bread is life in the desert. Bread is the communion of family and friends in the desert. Each morning when we wake, we will find Sheikh Suliman or Eid preparing the dough for us to have delicious freshly baked bread with our morning tea or coffee.

Bread is vital in the desert. It represents an ancient tradition going back to the friendship of St. Anthony and St. Paul in the desert in the 4th century when a raven would daily bring a whole loaf of bread to them.  Bread was for physical nourishment and symbolically, it was for spiritual nourishment.

Jesus spoke Aramaic and the words “Hawvlan lachma d'sunqanan yaomana” has been translated into give us this day our daily bread."Lachma,” bread, is also directly related to the word for wisdom, “Hochma.” The prayer asks for both bread and for wisdom be brought forth from the depths of our being. Both are necessary to sustain us for growth in body and soul and to share so others may have what they need.  This is true communion.

Wishing you your daily bread.
