worthwhile practices
The morning light on these mountains is extraordinary. It casts a warm inviting glow on everything it touches.
A monk friend once told me, we also cast a light.
Nestled within the jagged red rocks of the Mountain of Moses or also known as “resting within the palm of God’s hand,” is the 1,500-year-old Monastery of St Catherine built by Emperor Justinian. During my quiet time, I thought of the Greek orthodox monks going about their work after their communal prayer time in the candle lit basilica. Like the ancient Egyptians, the monks also value a life structured around rhythm, order and harmony - work, study, silent prayer and communal prayer.
It was their belief that a daily rhythm helps to deepen knowledge into wisdom. Over time, regular practices that nurture body, mind and soul become infused at a cellular and neurological level.
I must agree. Each time I see Fr. Justin, head librarian of the monastery, he appears more beautiful in his calm, steadfast and prayerful ways. Like the morning sun, he casts a warm welcoming light on everyone he meets.
Wishing you worthwhile practices.
